Gas Engineer vs Heating Engineer vs Plumber

Do you need to hire an engineer? but are unsure which one you require Overall, plumbers, heating engineers, and gas engineers have always been distinct professions. To the lay person, they appear to be the same on the surface… Hiring a plumber to inspect your boiler, however, is usually a bad idea because most plumbers who advertise as such are not legally permitted to perform gas work unless they are Gas Safe Registered.

If you need a Gas Safe registered gas engineer in Nottingham, call Nottingham Boiler Solutions at 07974 368611. Our gas engineers cover the entire Nottingham area, including Mapperley, West Bridgford, and Hucknall.

Gas Engineers

To begin, Gas Engineers are skilled tradesmen who work with gas appliances and anything related to gas… such as boiler installationsservicing, and repairs. Some gas engineers are only certified to work on gas meters, while others are certified to work on all types of gas appliances!

Now…one of the key differences that distinguishes gas engineers from others. Is that all engineers must be annually registered with the Gas Safe Register! This is a legal requirement when working in the UK; make sure to ask for their information upfront when hiring an engineer; a registered engineer will have their ID card on them; you can then enter their card number on the Gas Safe Register website.

Plumber

A plumber’s role should be simple to understand; the point where people get confused is that plumbers cannot touch a boiler unless they are Gas Safe registered. Plumbers can however do everything you’d expect them to do: pipework, installation and maintenance of potable (drinking) water, sewage, and drainage systems in plumbing systems.

Heating Engineers

Heating engineers usually cooperate with gas engineers to do as much work on a heating system that does not involve the usage of gas as possible. An NVQ or equivalent, which is the next level of education after a plumber, is usually held by heating engineers. It’s important to remember that a heating engineer might also be a plumber, which is rather frequent. ‘Heating engineers’ are also increasingly enrolling with the Gas Safe Register making the term ever more interchangeable with gas engineers and even more confusing.
