What is causes hot water to stop working?

There are numerous causes of hot water problems, many of which are caused by a boiler malfunction. The first thing to check is that your boiler system is operational.

If your boiler is faulty, the boiler’s display will show a boiler error code. Because each code corresponds to a different boiler fault, it is critical to cross-reference the code with your boiler manual. A Gas Safe engineer should always handle the majority of boiler faults.

Is there an issue with your gas, electricity, or water supply?

The most obvious cause of a lack of hot water is if your boiler’s power or water supply is disconnected. Whether you have a gas or electric boiler, it is critical that the correct fuel is always supplied to the system, as well as water from the mains or a separate storage tank.

It is common for the connection to these sources to be accidentally disconnected or to go down during a power outage. If you are certain that the connection to your boiler system is secure, check the supply to your other household appliances; it is possible that your home is experiencing a brief supply interruption. If the hot water problems persist, contact a gas engineer.

Power outages are common causes of a lack of hot water. Check your boiler display; if it is not turned on, a power outage has most likely turned your boiler settings off. You can resolve this problem by checking your main fuse box and turning on the boiler switch.

Is there a problem with your water pressure?

Boiler pressure is critical to the operation of a boiler. The system pressure must be sufficient for the appliance to function properly. This allows the system to heat water coming from the mains; if the pressure drops too low or rises too high, the system will automatically shut down, preventing any hot water from being sent around the house.

Check the pressure gauge on your boiler to see if it is at the recommended level. Modern boilers will also occasionally flash an error code to indicate a pressure-related problem.

Is your pilot light malfunctioning?

The pilot light going out is a common cause for a gas boiler to stop heating water. A pilot light, which was traditionally found on older appliances, is a small flame used to ignite the gas burner in gas boiler systems. Some boilers allow you to see the pilot light without removing the casing, while others use an electronic display to indicate whether the pilot light is on or off.

If your pilot light has gone out, turn the system back on safely by following the instructions in your boiler manual. If you follow the instructions and the flame still does not light, contact a gas engineer to investigate further. It’s possible that an internal part needs replacing.

Most modern appliances do not have a pilot light; instead, an electronic ignition system is used to light the gas when needed. Pilot lights are typically found on older appliances, typically those that are more than 20 years old.
